The custom of swapping engagement rings began during the period of Ancient Egyptian where they followed a tradition of wearing an engagement ring in the third finger of their left hand. This was because people of Ancient Egypt believed that the vein of this finger directly led to the heart. This vein was named “Vena Amoris”, which meant “the vein of love”.

 
The circle shape of the ring symbolizes eternity. The mythology declares that a ring of gold resembled the colour of the Sun whereas the ring made up silver resembled the colour of the Moon. 
 

People of US, Canada, England and France follow the tradition of wearing engagement ring in their third finger of their left hand whereas in countries like Russia, India and Germany they follow the custom of wearing the ring in their right hand.


Earlier engagement rings were exchanged as a symbol of financial commitment. Men would give ring to women that would signify that men are able to support women and her family financially. Along with the ring a purse bearing gold coins was also given to the woman to strengthen their financial prowess.


The tradition says that a man should spend at least his past two months salary for purchasing an engagement ring for his woman. However current research shows that a man spends nearly his three weeks salary on the engagement bands.


The most famous month to purchase engagement rings is December, reason being it is the festive season and nearly 15% of couples organize their engagement during this month. Christmas, New Year, Thanks Giving and Valentine’s Day are major days for getting engaged. 
 

The most commonly chosen engagement ring design is a brilliantly cut round diamond ring along with a princess cut. Diamond studded in gold, platinum, white gold or palladium metals looks fabulous.



A recent study reveals that nearly 28% women ignore the proposal if the engagement ring is not up to their expectation. One of the tips to choose wedding ring is to select the one that will suit the unique style of the couple as it is to be borne by the couple for their entire life. Make sure you do not choose crazy engagement rings like that of a cartoon or else your partner is bound to deny your proposal. 
 

The word “diamond” has Greek origin from the word “adamant”. Adamant means invincible or steadfast. Diamonds are indestructible. They are an extremely hard material yet brittle. India was the first discover of diamonds around 800 B.C. But diamonds were used in wedding bands only after the 15th century. 
 

If you throw ultraviolet light on the diamond in the dark it will glitter for few seconds. Thus you can make sure the diamond is real or not. 
 

You can also use engagement rings as wedding rings if you are running short of budget.
