Symbolism of Wedding Rings

Since years exchanging ring symbolises strong bonding of marriage. However in some cultures this practice has become obscured and some still carry forward this act. The circular ring indicates the eternal love and vows that a couple swears in at their marriage. Circle has been a prototype of being sempiternal and complete. The circle also represents speaking to the continuous rounds of the heaven as well as the return of the ever-lasting seasons, marked by periodic ritual and fest.

Rings have a profound ingrained magical importance. Rings are beautified with ancient figures of folk tales. Incantations for the safety of the wearer of the ring are a usual motif. In religious ceremonies, the wedding ring is blessed by a priest, followed by the symbolic custom of imbuing the engagement band with protective commands.

Wedding rings are worn in the left hand’s third finger. Speculation has it that this tradition was followed by the Romans. They believed that the vein from this finger ran directly to the heart. An alternative proposal to this was that as per ancient astronomy each finger of your hand was associated with a planet. The association of the left hand ring bearing finger was with the Sun. Thus wearing ring in that finger symbolises the social proclamation of two souls being united in the bright sunshine when the human community is clearly visible. A tradition of making rings of gold resembling the colour of Sun was made throughout the history and culture of folks. Similarly silver was associated with the moon.

Now-a-days designer wedding rings are available that are appealing and do not follow this tradition of associating the design with the Sun and the Moon. The art of the jeweller is combined with the concept of wedding band to create resonant love.
